About the Garrett GT30R and GT35R The Garrett GT30R and GT35R are medium-to-large frame ball-bearing performance turbochargers built for high-output applications. The GT30R is a popular choice for 300 to 500 horsepower builds on four-cylinder platforms including the Nissan SR20DET, RB20DET, and Mitsubishi 4G63. The GT35R steps up to support larger displacement engines and higher power targets, commonly found in RB26DETT builds, 2JZ-GTE applications, and high-power V8 conversions targeting 600 horsepower and above. Both turbos feature ball-bearing center sections and larger wheel designs compared to the GT25R/GT28R family. These design differences make the GT3x series capable of flowing significantly more air, but they also mean the turbo operates at higher temperatures and bearing loads — making gasket quality and complete replacement more important than in smaller-frame units. Ball-Bearing Center Sections and Why Gasket Integrity Matters More The GT30R and GT35R use a dual ball-bearing cartridge rather than the journal bearing design found in most OEM turbos. Ball-bearing turbos offer faster spool times and lower friction, but they are also more sensitive to oil contamination and thermal shock. A failed exhaust housing gasket that exposes the bearing housing to uncontrolled heat can damage the ball-bearing cartridge within hours of operation. A failed oil drain gasket in a ball-bearing GT30R or GT35R allows oil to pool in the center section. Pooled oil carbonizes at the high temperatures near the turbine, forming hard carbon deposits that restrict the oil drain passage and starve the bearing cartridge of lubrication. This carbon coking failure mode is the most common cause of premature ball-bearing turbo failure following a gasket replacement that was performed with the oil drain gasket reused rather than replaced. GT30R and GT35R Gasket Set Contents This kit contains the complete set of seals for a GT30R or GT35R rebuild: the self-sealing stainless steel exhaust housing gasket, the oil drain gasket, and the oil inlet gasket. All components are manufactured to OEM-equivalent specifications and dimensionally matched to the GT30R and GT35R center section oil port dimensions. Break-In Procedure After Rebuild After installing new gaskets, pre-lubricate the center section with fresh engine oil before starting. On the first startup, idle for five to ten minutes before applying any load. Avoid full-boost operation for the first 15 to 20 minutes of accumulated running time to allow the gaskets to complete their initial heat cycle and fully seat.
