About the Garrett T-25 Turbocharger The Garrett T-25 is a compact, single-scroll turbocharger that powered some of the most iconic turbocharged vehicles of the 1980s. Originally fitted to the Nissan 300ZX Turbo (Z31 body), the Datsun 280ZX Turbo, and select Mitsubishi models in the Japanese domestic market, the T-25 remains popular today among vintage turbo enthusiasts, restoration specialists, and JDM collectors. Because the T-25 is no longer in production, maintaining and rebuilding existing units is the only way to keep these turbos in service. A proper rebuild starts with a complete gasket replacement, and this Garrett T-25 turbo gasket set contains every seal needed to do the job correctly. Common T-25 Failure Symptoms The exhaust housing gasket is almost always the first component to fail on a high-mileage T-25. This gasket sits directly in the exhaust stream, cycling from ambient temperature to well over 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit every time the engine runs. Over time, repeated thermal cycling causes the gasket material to harden, crack, and lose its ability to conform to the mating surfaces. The result is a characteristic hissing or ticking noise under boost, which is frequently mistaken for a boost pipe leak or a wastegate issue. As the turbo warms up, metal expansion sometimes temporarily closes the leak, causing the noise to change or disappear — making diagnosis confusing. Inspecting and replacing the exhaust housing gasket is always the correct first step when diagnosing boost-related noises on a T-25 equipped vehicle. Oil Seal Failures on the T-25 Oil leaks from a failed drain gasket on the T-25 typically present as a slight seep at the bottom of the center section, unexplained oil consumption, or blue smoke on cold startup followed by clean exhaust once the pooled oil burns off. These symptoms are easy to overlook until the oil leak becomes severe or the center section develops bearing-damaging oil coking. Replacing the oil drain gasket and oil inlet gasket together with the exhaust housing gasket — as this kit allows — eliminates all three failure points in a single service event.
