BOSS Audio Systems CXX8 8 Inch Car Subwoofer – 600 Watts Maximum Power, Single 4 Ohm Voice Coil, Easy Mounting, Sold Individually
$ 12.59
I bought this unit (8″, 600Watt max variant) to replace the stock JBL subwoofer unit in my second generation Toyota Avalon (2000-2004 model years). The foam on the surround side is shockingly thick, and caused issues with mounting, but I brute forced the bracket together and managed to screw it down instead of slicing the foam down to fit. The wiring was easy enough, I didn’t bother with crimpons or solder, I twisted the wires on and used heatshrink where needed. I installedeverything back in the car,played some music, and for the first time since I have owned the car, the low end wasn’t broken.Now as for the stock unit? it’s going back in the box that the BOSS unit came in, and it’s going to stay there until I either throw it away, or the BOSS unit breaks and I have to return it.Hopefully the stock mounting bracket doesn’t break, and cause me to have to rig an alternative mounting solution; that plastic is very flexed, I’m surprised it didn’t just break outright.The stock unit is the classic cheap paper cone, and it has a twin-hump style foam surround. Actually, it HAD a twin-hump style foam surround. All that was left of it when I finally got to it and replaced it, was a small length of the inner surround hump. If the speaker ran with nothing wedged between the spider and cone, all I would hear in the low end of my music, was a collection of ear destroying clonking caused by the combination of the speaker overextending and the coil not being supported properly.Overall, if your car has as degraded of a stock audio unit as my car had, then the twenty dollars is more than worth it. If the speaker is actually better than the original unit was before it degraded (which I don’t know; I never heard it pre-degradation) that’s just a bonus.
